Description

This Air Fryer French Toast Casserole is golden, custardy, and ready in about 25 minutes — no oven required. Make it ahead, feed a crowd, and enjoy buttery cinnamon-vanilla flavor with bakery-style crisp edges.

Ingredients

  • ½ loaf, about 8–10 cups bread, cut into 1-inch cubes — brioche, challah, French, or sourdough (day-old works best)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • Optional: powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh fruit, or streusel topping

Instructions

  • Grease an oven-safe baking dish that fits your air fryer basket with butter or nonstick spray.
  • Place the bread cubes evenly in the prepared dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  • Slowly pour the custard over the bread, pressing down gently so every cube soaks it up.
  • Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes, or overnight for best results.
  • Drizzle the melted butter over the top. Cover the dish loosely with foil and air fry at 320°F (160°C) for 12–15 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 8–12 more minutes, until golden on top and set in the center (about 160°F internal; a knife inserted comes out mostly clean).
  • Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving. Finish with powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fresh fruit.

Equipment

  • Air fryer (basket or oven style)
  • Oven-safe baking dish that fits your air fryer basket (7-inch round, 8-inch square, or 1.5–2 qt)
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Aluminum Foil

Notes

  • Air fryers vary — check at the earliest time and add minutes as needed.
  • Day-old or stale bread absorbs the custard best and prevents sogginess.
  • For larger crowds, use an air fryer oven with a bigger dish, or cook in batches.
  • The covered-then-uncovered method sets the center before the top over-browns.
