Description

A 5-minute copycat McCormick country gravy mix. Whisk it once, store it in a jar, and turn it into thick, peppery white gravy with nothing but water — no packet, no drippings.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup nonfat dry milk powder
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons chicken bouillon powder
  • 1 tablespoon coarsely ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons rubbed sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground celery seed, optional

Instructions

  • Whisk all ingredients together in a medium bowl for a full minute until evenly combined.
  • Press through a fine sieve if the milk powder has compacted into lumps.
  • Transfer to an airtight jar and store in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months.
  • To prepare gravy: whisk ½ cup of mix into 2 cups cold water in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking constantly. Simmer 1 minute until thickened.
  • For sausage gravy: brown 1 lb breakfast sausage, leave the drippings in the pan, add the mix-and-water slurry, and simmer 2 minutes until thickened.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk

Notes

½ cup mix = one 2.64 oz packet = about 2 cups prepared gravy. Always start with cold liquid to prevent lumps. Substitute milk for the water for a richer gravy. For gluten-free, use a 1:1 GF baking blend in place of the flour.
