Description

An easy 5-minute copycat Pizza Hut pizza sauce made with tomato paste and a simple herb blend. No cooking required, and it tastes just like the real thing.

Ingredients

  • 6 ounce tomato paste
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon dried marjoram
  • ½ teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice, or ⅛ teaspoon citric acid

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, whisk the tomato paste with the warm water, adding the water gradually, until completely smooth with no lumps.
  • Whisk in the sugar, oregano, marjoram, basil, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Crush the dried herbs between your fingers as you add them.
  • Cover and let rest at room temperature for at least 30 minutes so the herbs can bloom.
  • Taste and adjust the sugar, salt, or water as needed.
  • Spread onto raw pizza dough and bake. Do not cook the sauce beforehand.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk

Notes

Refrigerate up to 1 week in an airtight container, or freeze in ½-cup portions for up to 3 months. The flavor improves overnight, so making it a day ahead is worth it.
