Air fryer pesto naan pizza takes seven minutes, uses five ingredients, and comes out of the basket with a crackly bottom crust and bubbling mozzarella. No dough, no rising, no heating up the oven in August.

The pesto is what makes this one different from a standard naan pizza. It goes on thin, straight onto the bread, and it toasts as the cheese melts — you get that basil-and-garlic smell filling the kitchen about four minutes in.

There is one thing that will ruin this pizza, and it is not the air fryer. It is wet spinach. I will show you exactly how to handle that below.

Why Naan Makes the Best Quick Pizza Base

Naan is already baked, so you are not waiting on raw dough to cook through. That is the whole trick. The air fryer only has two jobs here: melt the cheese and crisp the bottom of the bread. Both happen in under seven minutes.

It also holds up better than most shortcuts. Naan is thicker and sturdier than a tortilla, so it will not go limp under sauce, and it has more chew than a cracker crust. If you want the plain cheese version to start with, my air fryer naan pizza is the base recipe — this one is the grown-up pesto spin on it.

Ingredients

Naan bread, jarred pesto, shredded mozzarella, baby spinach, and cherry tomatoes on a countertop
  • Naan bread — 1 piece. Regular, garlic, whole wheat, or mini all work. Garlic naan is excellent with pesto. Check that it fits your basket before you top it; if it does not, cut it in half and cook both pieces.
  • Prepared pesto — 1/4 cup. Refrigerated pesto from the deli case has better basil flavor than shelf-stable jarred, but either is fine. Do not use more than 1/4 cup on a single naan — pesto is oily, and too much will soak straight through.
  • Baby spinach — 1/2 cup, cooked and squeezed dry. See below.
  • Shredded mozzarella — 1 cup. Low-moisture shredded melts more evenly here than fresh mozzarella, which releases water.
  • Cherry tomatoes — 1/2 cup, halved. Cut side up so the moisture evaporates instead of pooling.

The Spinach Step Everyone Skips

Raw spinach in an air fryer does two things: the exposed leaves scorch and curl into black flecks in the fan wind, and the leaves under the cheese steam and dump water onto the naan.

So cook it first, then wring it out. Wilt the baby spinach in a dry skillet for about a minute, or microwave it for 30 seconds. Then pile it into a paper towel or a clean kitchen towel and squeeze — hard. You will be surprised how much liquid comes out, and half a cup of raw spinach collapses down to a few tablespoons.

That squeeze is the difference between a crisp pesto naan pizza and a soggy one. Frozen chopped spinach works too, thawed and squeezed the same way.

How to Make Air Fryer Pesto Naan Pizza

Preheat the air fryer to 350°F. Preheating matters more than people think on this recipe — a cold basket means the cheese melts before the bottom of the naan ever crisps, and you end up with a floppy crust.

Why 350°F and not 400°F like a standard cheese naan pizza? Pesto is basil and oil, and both brown fast. At 400°F the pesto darkens and turns bitter before the cheese is done. Lower and a touch slower keeps it green and sweet.

Spread the pesto thin. Leave a half-inch border around the edge so it does not run off and smoke on the basket.

Layer in this order: pesto, tomatoes cut side up, squeezed spinach, then mozzarella on top. Cheese last is deliberate — it acts as a lid and holds the spinach down so it does not fly around in the fan.

Cook 4 to 7 minutes at 350°F, until the cheese is fully melted and just starting to spot brown at the edges. Start checking at 4 minutes. Every air fryer runs differently, especially depending on where the heating element sits, and my air fryer cooking charts can help you dial in your own model.

Let it rest two minutes before slicing. Cutting straight out of the basket drags the melted cheese off the top.

Tips for a Crispy Bottom

  • Toast the bare naan for 2 minutes first if your air fryer’s element sits low or you like a really crisp base. Flip it, top it, then finish cooking.
  • Do not skip the preheat. It is the single biggest factor in bottom crust.
  • Use a liner, carefully. Cheese and pesto oil both drip. Parchment makes cleanup easy, but never put it in an empty preheating basket — see my guide on using parchment paper in the air fryer for the safety rules.
  • Do not crowd the basket. Two naan stacked or overlapping will steam each other. Cook them one at a time; the second one only takes 5 minutes once the basket is already hot.
  • Pat the tomatoes dry if they look juicy after cutting.

Variations

Once you have the method down, the toppings are open. A few that work well on the pesto base:

  • Pesto margherita — swap the shredded mozzarella for torn fresh mozzarella and add basil after cooking. If you want the classic tomato-sauce version instead, try my air fryer margherita flatbread pizza.
  • Pesto chicken — add shredded rotisserie chicken under the cheese.
  • Pesto and sun-dried tomato — drain them well and chop fine.
  • Roasted vegetable — peppers, onions, and zucchini, all pre-cooked so they do not release water. My air fryer veggie flatbread and air fryer pepper and onion flatbread both use that approach.
  • Prosciutto — add it after cooking, not before.

Low-carb and gluten-free: any low-carb naan, gluten-free flatbread, or sturdy tortilla works with the same time and temperature. Thinner bases run closer to 4 minutes than 7.

What to Serve With It

One naan pizza is a solid lunch for one, or dinner for two with a side. A simple arugula salad with lemon cuts the richness of the pesto. If you are feeding more people, add a second naan and stagger them — the air fryer only fits one at a time in most baskets. It also slots easily into a weekly meal plan as a use-up-the-produce night.

Storing and Reheating

Let leftovers cool completely, then wrap tightly or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days.

Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 2 to 3 minutes. This is the one leftover pizza that reheats genuinely well — the naan re-crisps instead of going rubbery the way microwaved pizza does. Do not microwave it.

I do not recommend freezing an assembled pizza. The spinach and tomatoes weep on thawing and the naan turns soft. If you want to prep ahead, cook and squeeze the spinach and halve the tomatoes up to two days early, then assemble right before cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you put naan in an air fryer? Yes. Naan is already cooked, so the air fryer is only reheating and crisping it. Plain naan takes about 2 minutes at 350°F; topped as a pizza, 4 to 7 minutes.

Why is my naan pizza soggy? Almost always moisture from the toppings. Squeeze cooked spinach dry, place tomatoes cut side up, use low-moisture shredded mozzarella rather than fresh, and keep the pesto to a thin layer. A cold, un-preheated basket is the other common cause.

What temperature do you cook naan pizza in an air fryer? 350°F for a pesto version. Pesto browns faster than tomato sauce, so a plain cheese or marinara naan pizza can go higher, around 400°F.

Can I use fresh pesto instead of jarred? Yes, and it tastes better. Homemade pesto is often looser, so spread it a little thinner or it will soak into the bread.

Do I need to preheat the air fryer? For this recipe, yes. Without a preheat the cheese finishes before the bottom crust crisps.

Can I use pita or flatbread instead of naan? Yes. Pita runs thinner and cooks faster — my air fryer pita pizza is done in about 6 minutes. Any flatbread in the air fryer pizza recipes category will take the same pesto treatment.
