Breakfast sausage is one of those foods that seems simple until you’re standing over a skillet at 6:45 a.m., dodging grease spatter and rotating links that refuse to brown evenly. The Ninja Crispi solves that problem almost embarrassingly well. The PowerPod blasts heat straight down onto the food, the crisper plate lifts the sausage above the rendered fat, and the whole thing cooks in a glass container you can rinse in thirty seconds.

No preheating. No pan. No stovetop babysitting. Here’s how to do it right.

Why the Crispi Is So Good at Sausage

Three things work in your favor here:

The crisper plate elevates the sausage. Breakfast sausage renders a surprising amount of fat — sometimes two or three tablespoons from a single batch. On a skillet, that fat pools around the links and steams the bottoms. In the Crispi, it drips through the plate and collects in the glass below, so every surface stays dry enough to brown.

Heat comes from directly above. The PowerPod sits right on top of the food, which means fast, aggressive browning without a long preheat. The tradeoff: whatever sits closest to the center of the pod cooks fastest, so a mid-cook flip actually matters.

Cleanup is glass, not cast iron. Pour off the grease, and the container goes in the dishwasher. If you’ve ever scrubbed sausage fond out of a nonstick pan, you already understand why this matters on a weekday.

What You’ll Need

Ninja Crispi PowerPod, glass container, crisper plate, and raw breakfast sausage links laid out on a counter
  • 6 to 8 fresh breakfast sausage links, or 4 to 6 sausage patties
  • Ninja Crispi PowerPod
  • 6-cup or 2.5-qt CleanCrisp container (use the 4-qt Big Batch container for larger batches)
  • Crisper plate — this is not optional for sausage
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon of water in the bottom of the container

No oil needed. Breakfast sausage brings its own.

How to make Ninja Crispi Breakfast Sausage

Step 1: Drop the crisper plate into your glass container. If you’re cooking fatty pork sausage, add about a tablespoon of water underneath the plate first. It sounds counterintuitive, but it keeps the rendered grease from hitting hot glass and smoking. This one trick eliminates most Crispi smoke complaints.

Step 2: Arrange the sausage in a single layer. Links should sit side by side without touching. Patties get the same treatment — overlap them and you’ll end up with pale, steamed edges. In the 6-cup container, expect 4 to 6 links or 3 to 4 patties. Step up to the 4-qt Big Batch container if you’re feeding a crowd.

Step 3: Attach the PowerPod and select Air Fry. On the original Crispi (FN100/FN101), Air Fry runs hot — around 400°F — with no temperature adjustment, which is exactly what you want. On the Crispi Pro, set Air Fry to 390°F. Max Crisp works too, but at a fixed 450°F it can scorch the casings before the centers come up to temperature.

Step 4: Cook, flipping once. Fresh links need 8 to 10 minutes. Flip them at the halfway mark with tongs — the Crispi Pro pauses automatically when you lift the container, and on the original you can just tap stop.

Step 5: Check the internal temperature. Pork sausage is done at 160°F. Chicken and turkey sausage need 165°F. An instant-read thermometer into the thickest link takes two seconds and removes all guesswork, which is worth it with ground pork.

Step 6: Rest for two minutes, then serve. Pour the rendered fat out of the glass while it’s still warm and liquid — much easier than chiseling it out after it congeals.

Timing Cheat Sheet

All times assume Air Fry mode with a crisper plate and a single layer. Start checking at the low end.

What you’re cookingModeTimeFlip?
Fresh pork linksAir Fry8–10 minYes, at 5 min
Fresh pork pattiesAir Fry7–9 minYes, at 4 min
Turkey or chicken linksAir Fry9–11 minYes, at 5 min
Frozen raw linksAir Fry11–13 minYes, at 6 min
Frozen raw pattiesAir Fry10–12 minYes, at 5 min
Fully cooked links (brown-and-serve)Air Fry4–6 minYes, at 3 min

A note on converting other recipes: Ninja’s own guidance is to follow standard air fryer instructions but cut the time by 3 to 5 minutes. The Crispi runs hotter and closer to the food than a basket-style fryer, so a recipe written for a 6-qt air fryer will overshoot if you follow it literally.

Five Tips That Actually Change the Result

Don’t crowd the container. This is the single most common mistake. Sausage needs airflow around it to brown. Two smaller batches beat one crammed batch every time, and the second batch only takes 8 minutes anyway.

Prick nothing. Old skillet advice says to pierce sausage casings. Don’t. In the Crispi the fat has somewhere to go already, and piercing just drains the juices that keep the interior tender.

Use the water trick for fatty sausage. A tablespoon of water under the crisper plate makes a real difference with high-fat pork sausage. Skip it for lean turkey sausage, which barely renders.

Cook patties slightly thinner than you would in a pan. Top-down heat browns the surface fast. A patty much thicker than half an inch can brown beautifully outside while lagging inside — flatten to about ⅜ inch and everything finishes together.

Recrisp is your leftover superpower. Cook a double batch on Sunday, refrigerate in the same glass container with the storage lid, and hit leftovers with 3 minutes of Recrisp during the week. They come out better than they did on day one, because the exterior re-crisps while the inside is already cooked through.

Building a Full Breakfast

Since the Crispi containers stack and store, this recipe scales into a real meal without much extra effort:

  • Sausage and potatoes: Cook diced potatoes on Air Fry for 12 minutes first, then add the sausage on top for the last 9. The sausage fat seasons the potatoes as it drips.
  • Sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich: Cook patties, then swap in split English muffins with cheese and hit them with 2 minutes on Air Fry while you fry an egg.
  • Meal-prep breakfast burritos: Double the sausage batch, crumble it, and roll into tortillas with scrambled eggs. Reheat wrapped in foil on Recrisp for 5 minutes.

Common Questions

Do I need to preheat the Ninja Crispi? No. The PowerPod comes up to temperature almost immediately, and preheating an empty container just wastes a few minutes.

Can I cook sausage without the crisper plate? You can, but you shouldn’t. Without it the sausage sits in its own rendered fat and the bottoms go soft and greasy instead of browning.

Why is my Crispi smoking? Rendered fat hitting hot glass. Add a tablespoon of water under the crisper plate, and clean the container thoroughly between batches — residual grease from a previous cook is usually the real culprit.

Can I cook sausage straight from frozen? Yes. The borosilicate glass handles the temperature swing, and frozen raw links need roughly 3 extra minutes. Separate them before cooking if they’re frozen in a block.

What about sausage crumbles for gravy or casseroles? Break raw bulk sausage into rough chunks, skip the crisper plate, and Air Fry for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring twice. You’ll want the fat to stay in the container for gravy anyway.

Breakfast sausage in the Ninja Crispi takes about nine minutes of mostly hands-off time and produces links with a genuinely crisp exterior — the kind that’s hard to get in a skillet without overcooking the middle. Once you’ve done it twice, you probably won’t go back to the pan.

Description

Crispy breakfast sausage links and patties cooked in the Ninja Crispi in under 10 minutes. No preheating, no skillet, and no grease spatter — just evenly browned sausage with a glass container that rinses clean.

Ingredients

  • 6 fresh breakfast sausage links, about 12 oz
  • 1 tbsp water, for the bottom of the container

Instructions

  • Place the crisper plate in the glass container. Add 1 tablespoon of water underneath the plate to prevent rendered fat from smoking.
  • Arrange the sausage links in a single layer on the crisper plate, spaced so they are not touching.
  • Attach the PowerPod and select Air Fry. On the Crispi Pro, set the temperature to 390°F. Set the timer for 9 minutes.
  • At the 5-minute mark, lift the container and turn each link with tongs. Return and resume cooking.
  • Check the internal temperature at the thickest point. Pork sausage is done at 160°F; chicken or turkey sausage at 165°F. Add 1 to 2 minutes if needed.
  • Rest 2 minutes, then serve. Pour off the rendered fat while it is still warm.

Equipment

  • Ninja Crispi PowerPod
  • 6-cup or 2.5-qt CleanCrisp glass container
  • Crisper plate
  • Tongs
  • Instant-read thermometer

Notes

  • Frozen links: Add 3 minutes. No need to thaw.
  • Patties: Reduce to 7 to 9 minutes, flipping at 4 minutes. Flatten to about ⅜ inch thick.
  • Fully cooked links: 4 to 6 minutes on Air Fry is plenty.
  • Leftovers: Refrigerate up to 4 days in the same glass container. Reheat 3 minutes on Recrisp.
  • Do not skip the crisper plate. Without it the sausage sits in rendered fat and the undersides steam instead of browning.
  • Nutrition varies significantly by brand and by how much fat renders out. Calculate from your specific package for accuracy.
