This air fryer cheeseburger pizza tastes exactly like a bacon cheeseburger, right down to the tangy burger sauce and the cold dill pickles on top. The crust gets par-baked first so it stays crisp under all that beef and cheese, and the whole thing comes together in about 40 minutes on a weeknight.

It’s the recipe my family asks for when they can’t decide between burgers and pizza night — so we stopped deciding.

Why This Recipe Works

Cheddar, not mozzarella. Sharp cheddar is what makes it taste like a cheeseburger instead of a pizza with beef on it.

The crust gets par-baked. Four to six minutes of dry heat before any toppings go on is the difference between a crisp bottom and a soggy one. This is the single most important step.

The sauce is real burger sauce, not marinara. Ketchup, mustard, mayo, and dill relish give you that unmistakable drive-thru flavor.

The pickles go on cold, at the end. Air-fried pickles turn limp and watery. Adding them after cooking keeps the crunch and the vinegar bite.

What Is Cheeseburger Pizza?

Cheeseburger pizza — sometimes called hamburger pizza — swaps traditional pizza sauce for a ketchup-and-mustard burger sauce and tops the crust with seasoned ground beef, bacon, onion, cheddar, and pickles. Chain versions have been on menus for years; if you’re after that specific flavor, try my copycat Domino’s cheeseburger pizza next. This version is built for the air fryer, which means a crispier crust and no 450°F oven heating up your kitchen.

Ingredients

The full printable ingredient list with measurements is in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Ingredients for air fryer cheeseburger pizza arranged on a table: pizza dough, ground beef, bacon, shredded cheddar, red onion, dill pickles, ketchup, and mustard
  • Pizza dough — store-bought refrigerated dough or homemade. See the crust options below if you’re short on time.
  • Ground beef — 80/20 gives the best flavor. Lean beef, ground turkey, or ground chicken all work; just drain well.
  • Bacon — regular or turkey bacon, cooked crisp and crumbled.
  • Red onion — diced small so it cooks through in the skillet.
  • Sharp cheddar cheese — shred it yourself. Bagged shreds are coated in anti-caking starch and don’t melt as smoothly.
  • Dill pickles — sliced, added cold after cooking.
  • Worcestershire sauce, kosher salt, black pepper — for seasoning the beef.
  • Ketchup, yellow mustard, mayonnaise, dill relish — the burger sauce.
  • Olive oil or cooking spray — for the pan.

How to Make Cheeseburger Pizza Sauce

This sauce takes two minutes and is the whole personality of the recipe. Whisk together:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons dill relish

That ratio lands right in classic burger-sauce territory — tangy and creamy without the mustard taking over. Taste it before it goes on the crust and adjust: more relish for tang, a pinch of smoked paprika for depth, or a splash of pickle brine if you want it sharper.

How to Make Air Fryer Cheeseburger Pizza

Wooden spoon breaking up ground beef and red onion browning in a stainless steel skillet

Step One: Cook the Beef and Bacon

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced red onion until the beef is browned, about 6 to 8 minutes. Add the Worcestershire sauce and season with kosher salt and black pepper. Drain off the fat and set aside. In the same skillet, cook the bacon until crisp. Transfer to paper towels to drain, then crumble.

Shortcut: you can cook the bacon in the air fryer at 400°F for 8 to 10 minutes while the beef browns on the stove — the same method I use for my air fryer loaded bacon and cheese fries.

Step Two: Mix the Sauce

Combine the ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, and dill relish in a small bowl. Set aside.

Step Three: Par-Bake the Crust

Preheat the air fryer to 330°F for 3 to 5 minutes. Grease your pizza pan with cooking spray or brush it with olive oil, then press the dough into the pan.

Par-bake the crust for 4 to 6 minutes, until the surface is dry and just turning golden. Don’t skip this. A raw crust under wet sauce and heavy toppings will steam instead of crisp.

Step Four: Add the Toppings

Spread the burger sauce over the crust, leaving a small border. Sprinkle on half the cheddar, then the beef and crumbled bacon, then the remaining cheddar on top. Layering cheese underneath the meat helps anchor everything so toppings don’t blow around in the fan. Air fry at 330°F for 6 to 10 minutes, until the cheese is fully melted and bubbling.

Step Five: Finish and Serve

Let the pizza rest 2 to 3 minutes so the cheese sets, then scatter the cold dill pickle slices over the top. Slice and serve immediately.

Basket vs. Oven-Style Air Fryer

This is the question I get most, and it changes how you make the recipe.

Basket air fryers (5–6 quart): A standard 12-inch pizza pan will not fit. Use a 7- or 8-inch round pan and split the dough into two smaller pizzas, cooking them one at a time. Reduce the par-bake to 3 to 4 minutes and the final cook to 5 to 7 minutes, since a smaller pizza sits closer to the heating element.

Oven-style air fryers and air fryer toaster ovens: A 10- to 12-inch pizza pan fits on the middle rack. Use the times as written. If your model runs hot, check at the 6-minute mark.

Ninja Foodi and multi-cookers: Use the air crisp function and the same temperatures. Most models will fit an 8-inch pan.

Every air fryer runs differently, so watch the cheese rather than the clock the first time you make it. You’ll find more model-specific timing notes across my air fryer recipes.

Crust Options When You’re Short on Time

You don’t need to make dough from scratch:

  • Two-ingredient dough — self-rising flour and Greek yogurt, the same base I use for my 2-ingredient air fryer pizza. Ready in five minutes.
  • Flatbread or naan — no par-bake needed. Toppings go straight on, then air fry 6 to 8 minutes. This is the approach behind my air fryer margherita flatbread pizza.
  • Puff pastry — flaky and fast, though richer. See my air fryer puff pastry pizza for the technique.
  • Refrigerated crescent or biscuit dough — press it into the pan and par-bake a little longer, 6 to 7 minutes.

Pro Tips

  • Preheat the air fryer every time. Dropping a pan into a cold basket costs you the crisp bottom.
  • Go light on toppings. Overloading is the number one cause of a soggy air fryer pizza. Moisture has nowhere to go.
  • Drain the beef thoroughly. Grease pooling on the crust will undo the par-bake.
  • Let it rest before slicing. Two or three minutes lets the cheese set so the toppings stay put.
  • Use parchment only after preheating, and always weigh it down with the pan — loose parchment can fly into the heating element.

Variations and Toppings

  • Deluxe — add diced tomato and shredded iceberg lettuce after cooking, never before.
  • Bacon double cheeseburger — double the bacon and add American cheese alongside the cheddar, the same combination as my air fryer bacon cheeseburger.
  • Mushroom Swiss — swap cheddar for Swiss and add sautéed mushrooms.
  • Southwest — add jalapeños and pepper jack, in the spirit of my air fryer taco pizza.
  • Animal style — caramelize the onions instead of sautéing them and add extra sauce after cooking.

Storing and Reheating

Store leftover slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Remove the pickles first — they’ll soften the crust overnight.

To reheat, air fry at 350°F for 3 to 4 minutes. The air fryer is genuinely the best tool for this; it revives the crust in a way a microwave never will. Add fresh pickles after reheating.

Cheeseburger pizza doesn’t freeze especially well once assembled — the sauce makes the crust soggy on thaw. If you want to prep ahead, cook the beef and bacon up to 2 days in advance and refrigerate them separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to par-bake the crust?

Yes, if you’re using raw dough. Air fryers cook from the top down, so a crust covered in sauce and cheese never gets enough direct heat to set. Four to six minutes of dry heat first is what gives you a crisp bottom. Flatbread and naan are already baked, so they can skip it.

What size pizza fits in my air fryer?

For most 5- to 6-quart basket models, 7 to 8 inches is the maximum. Oven-style air fryers usually handle 10 to 12 inches. Measure your basket before you shape the dough.

When do I add lettuce, tomato, and pickles?

Always after cooking. Fresh toppings wilt and release water in the air fryer, which makes the crust soggy and the lettuce unpleasant.

Can I use ground turkey or chicken?

Yes. Both work well — just season a little more aggressively, since they’re milder than beef, and make sure the Worcestershire sauce goes in.

What cheese is best for cheeseburger pizza?

Sharp cheddar, because it’s what makes the pizza taste like a burger. A cheddar-mozzarella blend gives you better stretch if you want the cheese pull; American cheese melts smoothest but is milder.

Can I make this without a pizza pan?

Yes. Line the basket with a piece of parchment cut to size, preheat first, then lay the dough on the parchment. You’ll get slightly less browning on the bottom, so add a minute to the par-bake.

How do I keep toppings from blowing around?

Layer cheese underneath the beef and bacon so it melts and holds them in place, and don’t overload the pizza. A pan also helps considerably compared to a bare basket.
