Air fryer breadsticks from pizza dough are the fastest way I know to get warm, buttery, parmesan-dusted breadsticks on the table. One pound of store-bought dough, six minutes of air frying, and you get something close enough to Pizza Hut’s that my kids stopped asking for delivery.

No yeast to proof. No rising time. No heating the oven for a side dish.
The trick most copycat recipes miss is the parmesan. Pizza Hut’s breadsticks aren’t just garlic bread — they’re finished with a dry parmesan-and-herb blend the moment they come out hot, which is why the seasoning clings the way it does. Skip that step and you have breadsticks. Include it and you have those breadsticks.
Why Pizza Dough Works So Well in the Air Fryer
Circulating hot air hits the outside of the dough fast, setting a thin crust before the inside has finished expanding. You get the crisp exterior and soft, chewy center that defines a good breadstick — the same texture contrast that makes air fryer garlic knots work.
It’s also forgiving. Store-bought dough, homemade dough, and gluten-free pizza dough all behave more or less the same way here. If you’d rather make your dough from scratch, my homemade air fryer bread post walks through the basics.
Ingredients

- Pizza Dough: Store-bought or homemade, brought fully to room temperature.
- Butter: Unsalted and melted, brushed on before and after.
- Parmesan Cheese: Dry shaker-style grated parmesan, never fresh or shredded.
- Garlic Powder: Powder, not salt, for even coating without clumping.
- Italian Seasoning: The oregano and basil backbone of the blend.
- Onion Powder: Adds savory depth most copycat recipes leave out.
- Parsley: Dried, for the flecks of green and color.
- Salt: Fine salt balances the butter and parmesan richness.
Two ingredient notes that matter:
Room temperature dough is not optional. Cold dough fights back when you stretch it and snaps into uneven pieces. Pull it out 30 minutes ahead.
Use dry shaker parmesan, not fresh. Fresh parmesan has too much moisture — it clumps and slides off instead of coating. The dry stuff is what gives you that powdery restaurant finish.
How to Make Air Fryer Breadsticks from Pizza Dough

Step 1: Divide and shape the dough. Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a rope about 6 inches long, then twist it two or three times. Twisting isn’t just for looks — it creates ridges that trap butter and seasoning.
Your air fryer basket dictates the size here. Measure it before you start shaping. You want a full inch between breadsticks so air can move; crowded breadsticks steam instead of crisping.

Step 2: Mix the seasoning. Combine the parmesan, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, onion powder, parsley, and salt in a small bowl. Set it aside — this goes on after cooking, not before.
Step 3: Butter and air fry. Brush the twisted dough generously with melted butter. Place in the air fryer basket in a single layer and cook at 350°F for 6 to 8 minutes, until deep golden brown.

Step 4: Season immediately. The second they come out, brush with the remaining melted butter and shower the seasoning blend over the top. Hot, wet breadsticks grab the parmesan. Cooled ones don’t.
Step 5: Serve warm with marinara for dipping.
Air Fryer Breadstick Times and Temperatures
| Dough type | Temperature | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Store-bought pizza dough | 350°F | 6–8 minutes |
| Homemade pizza dough | 350°F | 7–9 minutes |
| Gluten-free pizza dough | 340°F | 8–10 minutes |
| Reheating leftovers | 300°F | 2–3 minutes |
Every air fryer runs a little differently. Check at the 5-minute mark the first time you make these. A finished breadstick reads 190–200°F in the center — worth checking if yours are thick, since a golden outside can hide raw dough.

Tips for Better Breadsticks
- Don’t skip the preheat. Three minutes at 350°F. Dough placed in a cold basket spreads before it sets.
- Roll thinner than feels right. Pizza dough puffs considerably. A rope that looks too skinny going in comes out about right.
- Brush butter twice. Once before cooking for browning, once after for flavor and to give the seasoning something to stick to.
- Use parchment for gluten-free dough. It’s stickier and more fragile. Cut a piece to fit and poke a few holes for airflow.
- Work in batches. Two crowded batches beat one crammed one every time.
What to Serve With Air Fryer Breadsticks
Marinara is the classic, but these hold up next to almost anything saucy:
- Quick and easy spaghetti meat sauce — the pairing everyone reaches for first
- Copycat Chili’s Cajun chicken pasta — the breadsticks are perfect for the leftover cream sauce
- Blackened chicken penne
For a full Pizza Hut night at home, make these alongside my air fryer copycat Pizza Hut pan pizza, then finish with copycat Pizza Hut cinnamon sticks for dessert. Same pound of dough, three courses.

How to Store Leftover Breadsticks
Cool completely on a wire rack first — trapping steam makes them soggy. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for up to 5.
To freeze: Cool completely, then freeze in a single layer on a sheet pan before transferring to a freezer bag. They keep for up to 3 months. Reheat straight from frozen at 300°F for 4 to 5 minutes.
How to Reheat Pizza Hut Breadsticks (or Any Leftovers)
The air fryer is the best method by a wide margin. The microwave turns breadsticks rubbery; the oven takes ten minutes to heat up for a two-minute job.
Air fryer, refrigerated or room temperature: 300°F for 2 to 3 minutes. Brush with a little melted butter first if they’ve dried out.
Air fryer, frozen: 300°F for 4 to 5 minutes.
Oven: 350°F for 5 to 7 minutes, wrapped loosely in foil.
Restaurant leftovers reheat especially well this way — the parmesan seasoning re-crisps rather than going gummy. Don’t stack them in the basket, and skip the microwave entirely.

Are Pizza Hut Breadsticks Vegan?
Not as they come, but they can be ordered vegan. The dough itself contains no animal products. The problem is what goes on top: the parmesan seasoning blend contains dairy, and the buttery topping is worth asking about too.
To order them vegan, request no parmesan seasoning and no buttery blend. Some locations don’t let you make that modification through the app or website, so calling or ordering in person is more reliable. Marinara dipping sauce is generally the safe choice alongside them.
One caveat worth stating plainly: Pizza Hut kitchens handle a lot of cheese, so cross-contact is realistic. If you’re avoiding dairy for allergy reasons rather than dietary ones, that’s a different risk calculation — check the current allergen guide on Pizza Hut’s site, since formulations change.
To make this recipe vegan at home: swap in vegan butter and replace the parmesan with 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast. The nutritional yeast gives you the same savory, cheesy dust without the dairy, and it’s what I’d reach for regardless if I wanted the seasoning to keep longer in the pantry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use canned refrigerated pizza dough? Yes. Let it sit out for 20 minutes first, and expect it to cook a minute or so faster since it’s thinner than fresh dough balls.
Do I need to preheat the air fryer? Three minutes at 350°F makes a noticeable difference in how evenly they brown.
Why did mine come out doughy inside? Usually too thick, too crowded, or both. Roll thinner, leave an inch between each one, and check the center reads 190–200°F.
Can I add cheese on top? Yes — sprinkle shredded mozzarella over the breadsticks during the last 2 minutes of cooking for a cheese-stick version.
How many breadsticks does a pound of dough make? Eight standard-size breadsticks. Adjust to fit your basket; a smaller air fryer may mean shorter sticks and more batches.
Can I make the seasoning ahead? Yes. Mix a double or triple batch and store it in a sealed jar. With real parmesan it keeps about 2 weeks in the fridge; made with nutritional yeast it keeps for months in the pantry.
